We are frequently questioned about what makes Shetland yarn, and our own Shetland 2000, unique. We buy our yarn directly from Jamieson & Smith Shetland Wool Brokers, Ltd. We would like to share some information about their history.
"Our Shetland wool is world famous. First (probably) used by the Vikings, and subsequently by everyone needing warmth, comfort and style -- from Scottish Fishermen, to the Tailors of Savile Row. Queen Victoria had a pair of Shetland Lace stockings . . . and Sir Edmund Hillary was wearing a Shetland woolen jumper when he was the first man in the world to conquer Everest.
"Its unique characteristics make it one of the warmest natural fibres in the world, and one of the most versatile. Its warmth:weight ratio makes it renowned for its heat retaining qualities while remaining lightweight (read: fantastic for outdoor clothing), and its incredible fineness enables it to be spun into the beautiful Heirloom garments such as shawls and stoles. . . .
"When you buy Jamieson & Smith, you can be sure that you are purchasing unblended, 100% Shetland wool -- from the Shetland breed of sheep that has been living in the Shetland Islands. We buy over 90% of the Shetland wool clip, and purchase all of our wool directly from the crofter and farmer here in Shetland. The wool is hand graded and sorted here, to give you the best possible wool from one of the world's most amazing and precious wool clips."
We are proud to be part of this tradition.
In addition to our Shetland 2000 line, we carry Koigu KPPPM, Nature's Palette Merino from Hand Jive, Cascade 220, and Noni bag packs (yarn and pattern). Please contact us for more information.
