This series of six new designs, Elements, recalls and celebrates our planetary elements Earth, Air, Fire, and Water, and their universe ancestors, Wind and Light.
The earliest human societies evolved rituals for favor and protection
using observable things at hand: animals, nature and, frequently, the elements. Rites took shape to mark seminal passages
of life, hunting and gathering; gods and goddesses were created
to provide blessings beyond human capacity. And later, structures
of stone and wood appeared to mark the importance of the rite or
the place.
For each of these new designs, I have put myself in a conceptual
place of experiencing an element for the first time, much like a
child. In this crew-neck cardigan, air’s life-sustaining embrace is
portrayed by quadruple, tessellated spirals—a visual representation
of air surrounding and sustaining all living things. |
