To admire the many lighthouses in Scotland and Shetland is to admire the eight generations of the Stevenson family who designed and built them. Robert Louis Stevenson the elder was the founder of the lighthouse Stevenson's Dynasty and the grandfather of the author of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Treasure Island, and Kidnapped.
Bressay Lighthouse stands at the southern entrance to Lerwick Harbor. Finished in 1858 by Thomas and David Stevenson, it was first lit by candles; later it ran on paraffin, was electrified in 1967, then automated in 1988.
