To admire the many lighthouses in Scotland and Shetland is to admire the eight generations of the Stevenson family who designed and built them. Robert Louis Stevenson the elder was the founder of the lighthouse Stevenson's Dynasty and the grandfather of the author of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Treasure Island, and Kidnapped.
Muckle Flugga, a rocky island north of the Shetland Mainland, is the northernmost point of the British Isles. It is home to the Muckle Flugga lighthouse, built by Thomas and David Stevenson in 1854, and fully automated in 1995. The construction of the lighthouse was especially challenging because of landing equipment and personnel on the small island in rough seas.
