Luckenbooth BroochDesign by Ron Schweitzer
Luckenbooth brooches are Scottish betrothal pins with a long history dating from about the late 1600s. Luckenbooths were small street market stalls that could be securely locked at night. Among their wares were heart-shaped brooches in many variations of design and size, with or without precious stones; a most elegant love token from a young man to his sweetheart. This design shows four variations of brooches from the most elaborate to the plainest. A drop-shoulder, crew neck cardigan, this garment uses 15 shades of Jamieson & Smith 2-ply jumper wool. It is knit entirely in the round using only two colors per round. Steeks are set at the garment front, armholes, and back neck, and later cut open. Stitches are then picked up around the resulting openings to knit the sleeves, the neckband, and buttonbands. Though the pattern repeats are large, the adventurous and patient knitter will be rewarded by a one-of-a-kind piece of wearable art with a uniquely Scottish history. 1st size 43.5 inches; 2nd size 49.5 inches; 3rd size 55.5 inches. All sizes $155.00. |
