SHETLAND 2000 BECOMES SHETLAND SUPREME
More than ten years ago Yarns International and Jamieson and Smith started Shetland 2000 on a dream and a shoestring. We all wanted to support the crofters of Shetland, help preserve a unique breed of sheep, and share the tradition of stranded knitting using undyed, minimally processed Shetland yarn. Jamieson and Smith worked with the farmers to produce, sort and process this yarn. Yarns International developed an extensive line of patterns to support it and marketed it in North America. We used Shetland knitters to test our patterns and make our models. The photos were, for the most part, taken in Shetland.
Recently, Jamieson and Smith has extended its natural yarn collection under the umbrella name of “Shetland Supreme Naturals,” a name which truly represents this supreme natural fiber--hand selected and sorted, the finest Shetland wool available. This new line includes gossamer and 2-ply lace weight yarns. Yarns International has been carrying these yarns since last fall and has commissioned several beautiful and exclusive patterns designed by Carol Rasmussen Noble.
Now Jamieson and Smith is adding a 2-ply jumper weight yarn to the Shetland Supreme line. We will be carrying that yarn and phasing out the Shetland 2000 name. It is the same yarn; only the labels will be changed.
Ron Schweitzer, master of Fair Isle design, has designed for us from the beginning and will continue to do so. Ron’s designs and those from all other Shetland 2000 designers can be knit with the two-ply jumper weight Shetland Supreme yarn.
It is very exciting that our dream has come so far. It is well set to grow and expand. We look forward to lots more Shetland knitting! |
